Legal Officer.

About the Role

We are seeking a qualified Legal Officer to provide legal counsel and support to our organisation on a wide range of corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters. You will be responsible for drafting and reviewing contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing litigation matters, and advising management on legal risks and obligations.

As a Legal Officer, you will work closely with various departments to provide timely legal guidance, support corporate governance activities, and represent the organisation s interests in dealings with regulators, external counsel, and third parties.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, commercially minded, and has a strong understanding of Nigerian corporate law, regulatory frameworks, and legal best practices.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, agreements, and legal documents.
• Provide legal advice to management and departments on regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and risk management.
• Monitor changes in Nigerian legislation and regulations that may affect the organisation and advise accordingly.
• Manage relationships with external solicitors and coordinate litigation and dispute resolution matters.
• Support corporate secretarial functions, including board meeting preparation, minutes documentation, and statutory filings with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry-specific requirements.
• Conduct legal research on emerging legal issues and provide written opinions and recommendations.
• Manage intellectual property matters, including trademark registrations and protection strategies.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognised university.
• Call to the Nigerian Bar (BL) and current membership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
• Minimum of 3 years of post-call experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
• Strong knowledge of Nigerian corporate and commercial law, contract law, and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, including service contracts, NDAs, and partnership agreements.
• Excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple legal matters simultaneously.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with diverse stakeholders.

Nice to Have

• Master of Laws (LL.M) or relevant postgraduate qualification.
• Experience with data protection and privacy law, including the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
• Familiarity with sector-specific regulations (e.g., CBN regulations for fintech, NCC guidelines for telecoms, NAFDAC for FMCG).
• Experience with mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, or securities regulation.
